Most Popular US Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) in 2019
Most Popular US Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) in 2019
Every year, well-known pilot, author and light-aircraft expert Dan Johnson completes an exhaustive study of the US sport aviation market in which he regularly makes surprising observations and discoveries. For example, in this year’s study, 2019 marks the first time ever that a single brand of Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) exceeds 1,000 units registered in the United States: This brand is Zenair/Zenith, with its STOL CH 750 kitplane. Also surprising is that this figure is almost twice as high as the next brand on Johnson’s list (Vans RV-12) - see charts below for details...
Also noteworthy: The light aviation sector (and LSA in particular) continues to grow and “kit-built” aircraft are leading the way. In fact, the LSA category is on track to reach 725 aircraft for the current year, an increase of about 5% over last year, and more than 10% over 2017.
Regarding Zenith, the thousand registered aircraft counted in the study include only one of the company’s six current models (the CH 750); in fact, Zenair also manufacture non-LSA and Experimental designs (including two 4-seat models) – and these are sold all over the world, not just in the US where the study was conducted... Hats off to Zenith for this success, and to Ontario-based Zenair which is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year!

Getting Your Float Rating on an island Getaway!
By Erwan Chauvin
If you live where “winter” means months for sub-freezing weather and snow, going to the Caribbeans for a week or two is not uncommon. Of course, “all-inclusive” holidays are great at first, but how many of those can you handle? If interested in flying, however, there is a little-known alternative for sun-seekers that want more than just a resort setting.
“Les Iles du Ciel” is a small flying school located on the paradise-like island of Guadeloupe since 2013. With its three instructors and two float-equipped aircraft, it has become a year-round destination for those that want to make “flying” part of their holidays: “We have walk-in tourists that just want to fly around the archipelago and enjoy the tropical scenes from above; we have want-to-be pilots who join us for formal instruction and flight training, and we have seasoned pilots seeking to expand their horizons and capabilities with a float rating” says Benedicte Muzellec, one of the company’s long-time instructors.“We cater to our customer’s flying needs, but can also arrange local accommodations and other unique activities to make everyone’s stay in Guadeloupe a memorable experience” says Raoul Jimenez another instructor, drone pilot as well as mechanic for the school. “It is also about experiencing a bit of Europe and French culture right here on America’s doorstep” he adds.
The two company aircraft are Rotax-powered Zenith STOL CH 701 equipped with all-season inflatable Full-Lotus floats; with more than 3,000 take-offs and landings per year, the school is planning to add a third plane to its fleet in the near future. How does that sound for your next holiday? Bienvenue!
For program details and pricing, you can visit the company website at www.ulm-guadeloupe.com; for aircraft-related information: www.zenithair.net; for Full-Lotus Floats: www.myfloats.com

Chris Heintz honored with "Aeronautical Medal" of France
Chris Heintz honored with "Aeronautical Medal" of France
Engineer, innovator, builder, entrepreneur, educator and author, aircraft-designer Chris Heintz was recently recognized for his lifetime contributions to aviation by France, his country of origin. Awarded the prestigious "Médaille Aéronautique" (Aeronautical Medal) at a ceremony in Montélimar, France, Chris humbly accepted the accolade saying: "It has been a privilege to help so many people fly in aircraft that they were able to build themselves".
Indeed, thousands of Heintz-designed amateur-built aircraft are flying around the world today. These were primarily assembled from kits manufactured by Zenair Ltd., the company he founded in Canada in the seventies, and Zenith Aircraft Company, the leading US aircraft kit manufacturer specializing in making kits for Heintz designs for the past 25 years. |
An aeronautical engineer by trade, Heintz was involved in a number of prominent aircraft projects during his prolific career: He worked on the Concorde SST in the sixties, then designed and certified the Robin HR series of 2-4 seat aircraft, models that are still popular in many European flying clubs today. Having moved to Canada in the early seventies he worked for DeHavilland on a number of projects including the Dash-7 turboprop-powered regional airliner. He then founded and successfully operated Zenair Ltd. for 35 years before retiring.
During that time, Chris designed over a dozen traditional recreational aircraft models; he developed a full line of aircraft floats and also manufactured wooden aircraft propellers. He created a unique ultralight utilizing never-before applied Princeton sail-wing principles, built a number of "proof-of-concept' prototypes and obtained full type-certification for the CH 2000 two-seat trainer. While developing his successful line of all-metal STOL aircraft, he also certified two of his designs to ASTM Light Sport (LSA) standards.

Throughout his professional life, Chris participated at countless shows, fly-ins and pilot gatherings where he spoke on aerodynamics, aircraft design and construction. He consulted actively and provided high-level guidance to various groups, agencies and departments on the subject appropriate regulations for light aircraft and played a major role in drafting Canada's Advanced Ultralight (AULA) regulations and the early drafts of the international ASTM light-sport aircraft (LSA) rules & standards.
|
After pulling back from day-to-day operations at Zenair, Chris still continued consulting for a number years while writing his book: a tell-all guide on how to design your own easy-to-build and easy-to-fly recreational aircraft. With this textbook now widely available (How to Fly on Your Own Wings - by Chris Heintz), Chris has returned to his native France to pursue other interests and to enjoy his retirement.

New THREE-Seat STOL Design Introduced!
New THREE-Seat STOL Design Introduced!
The STOL CH 750 Super Duty is the latest kitplane model in the Zenair high-wing line developed by aeronautical engineer Chris Heintz. The STOL CH 750 "Super Duty" (SD) is an expansion on the popular two-seat STOL CH 750 light-sport aircraft, but with an increased gross weight (and corresponding increased load). This allows the addition of a "jump seat" in the large rear cabin area and new engine choices for maximum short take-off and landing (STOL) performances.
The cabin itself is 42" wide (and up to 50” at the shoulders thanks to the standard bubble doors) and includes adjustable front seats . The huge rear cabin area is fitted with a rear jump seat and can easily carry up to 200 lbs., ideal for a passenger or all your camping and hiking gear. |
|
With a gross weight of 1,900 lbs, the prototype aircraft introduced at AirVenture is powered by a 205-hp IO-370 engine (Titan). Like other Zenair models, a wide choice of engines will be available for the new CH 750 SD model, ranging from 160 - 205 hp. Fitted with a Sensenich propeller, the prototype CH 750 SD is configured for maximum STOL performance. More info, pictures and videos here...

Zenair Working on a NEW "Super-Duty" STOL model!
The new CH 801-SD has a longer wing span, more tail surface and a greatly increased useful load!
Based on the success of the STOL CH 801-HD as a commercial spray plane (a.k.a. the CH-8000), Zenair has quietly been working on an even larger and more capable STOL aircraft than the currently available HD model. Among other modifications, this new CH 801-SD (Super-Duty) has 4 feet of additional wing span, a larger tail, a sturdier cabin frame and a beefier landing gear - all for an increased design gross weight of up to 2,700 lbs.
The new design is a “Special Project” being assembled together with a US-based builder and will feature dozens of top-of-the-line accessories and custom-features; it is not intended to replace the CH 801-HD. No "upgrade" kit or instructions are planned to convert the smaller and lighter original or HD models into this larger “Super STOL”, but the new CH 801-EX should soon be a new option for builders/pilots wanting a larger 4-seat aircraft with more power and additional weight-carrying capability.
The first American-registered CH 801-SD is currently nearing completion. More information soon at this Link... |

The first manufacturer you come to as you head up “kit Company Row” at Oshkosh is Zenith, makers of a variety of STOL and sport planes. This year, they are stopping traffic with their latest offering – the revamped SAM aircraft, a design they purchased from the original Canadian designer/owner (...).
Gone is the Rotax engine, replaced by a 180 HP Lycoming, a beefier structure, and a tailwheel to replace the original tricycle configuration. The greenhouse canopy remains, as does the polished aluminum of the prototype, and the net effect is “retro” and stylish. The revised airplane is on display here at AirVenture (...) – we hope to bring you a report on it as soon as they have gone through their test program and we can get our hands on it. |

STOL CH 750 Now Available Factory-Finished!
STOL CH 750 Now Available Factory-Finished!
In a joint statement, Zenair Ltd. of Midland, Ontario (Canada) and M-Squared Aircraft of St. Elmo, Alabama, have announced that production of ready-to-fly Zenith STOL CH 750 Light Sport (LS) aircraft has now resumed! This will be welcome news to fans of the popular STOL (short take-off and landing) design who don't have the time or inclination to assemble their own kit version of the airplane. The Zenith STOL CH 750 was offered as a factory-built S-LSA a number of years ago; this new joint venture between Zenair and M-Squared is an exciting new development from two long-established manufacturers.
|
The STOL airplanes will be assembled and finished at M-Squared facilities in Alabama (near Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico) from assemblies manufactured by Zenair Ltd. Each STOL CH 750 finished by M-Squared will be ASTM compliant and registered as an S-LSA with Zenair as the listed manufacturer. Paul Mather, founder and CEO of M-Squared said the deal with Zenair effectively makes his facility an extension of the Zenair factory, with all of the quality control, standardization, and ongoing airworthiness support that comes with that. Mather is excited about adding the all-aluminum LSA design to his company's current line of "tube & fabric" light aircraft designs.
|
Said Mather: "We have always been impressed by this innovative STOL designs. As an established LSA manufacturer, M-Squared is ideally positioned and equipped to produce the popular Light Sport CH 750. We plan to deliver the first new Zenith S-LSA's this spring!"

SAM Aircraft Acquired by Zenair/Zenith Aircraft
SAM Aircraft Acquired by Zenair/Zenith Aircraft
SAM Aircraft assets have been acquired by the sons of aircraft designer Chris Heintz, owners and operators of Zenair Ltd. (Canada) and Zenith Aircraft Company (U.S.).
The SAM Aircraft design, developed by Thierry Zibi of Quebec, is a low-wing all-metal tandem two-seater, unique in that it presents a rare balance between retro styling and modern engineering. It is inspired by legendary trainers of the Golden Age of Aviation, yet it offers pilot comfort, state-of-the-art technology and outstanding flight characteristics. Several variants of the design are being developed for different load configurations and performance characteristics. These will feature different wing sections (differing spans), as well as landing gear styles (tricycle or tailwheel) and canopy choices (fully enclosed or open cockpit). |
"The SAM Aircraft design is a distinctive and fun airplane and will be a welcome addition to the Zenith line of kit aircraft," stated Sebastien Heintz, president of Zenith Aircraft Company in Missouri. The design, construction and assembly of the SAM Aircraft series will integrate well into Zenith Aircraft's current production, which already relies heavily on CNC parts production.
To help the companies focus on the most sought-after features for new SAM Aircraft models, a short survey has been created that all interested parties are invited to complete. The online survey can be found here: http://j.mp/sam-survey. Based on survey results, SAM Aircraft may also be offered as complete kits, quick-build kits, and/or as fully factory-assembled aircraft.

RAA Chapter of Midland, latest to start building its own "Club Aircraft"
RAA Chapter of Midland, latest to start building its own "Club Aircraft"
Members of the local RAA Chapter in Midland ON, are joining a growing number of groups set to assemble their own club aircraft. "Building your own plane is both exciting and rewarding for the club" says Ian Reid, an active member. "We are discussing and working on what we are passionate about, it's great to see the camaraderie and what we accomplish together during our work sessions and we know we'll have a great new plane to fly when we're done". The excitement surrounding this project has re-enlivened the membership and word-of-mouth is attracting new members...
The non-profit group acquired the airframe kit for a 2-seat low-wing Zenair Zodiac and just held its first work-session. Attendees were all surprised at how much was accomplished in so little time; future sessions are planned for Saturday mornings until the project is complete. Then the flying will begin!
With the cost and complexities of private aircraft ownership ever increasing, the classic "Club Aircraft" is making a come-back and for groups associated with the EAA and RAA, building your own only makes sense. "Les Faucheurs de Marguerites" Fly-in
This great annual event was often attended by Chris Heintz in the past; this year again, Zenair was present - as were many CH kit-builders & flyers! Roger and Christiane Dulac displayed their brand new STOL CH 750 with a Rotax 914 and in-flight adjustable prop - perfect for their home runway! Denis Gagnon also flew in with his award-winning CH 750 (2nd place "Best-Homebuilt" at last year's event).
Kit-builders from Quebec are notorious for customizing their aircraft. On display were modified doors, modified seats, landing gears, springs, cowlings, fairings, strakes, fuel caps, slats, struts, etc. We even saw a custom-build 3-seat CH 701, pre-cursor to the CH 750 by a few years... Events such as this offer an ideal opportunity to meet factory represent-atives, but also plans & kit-builders as well as owners & pilots. |

The One-Week-Wonder: Successfully Completed!
The One-Week-Wonder: Successfully Completed!
The crate containing the kit for a Zenith CH 750 Cruzer was opened at AirVenture 2014 at 8 am on the first day of the show. Just a week later, on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, the airplane that over 2500 people helped to assemble during the One Week Wonder project flew for the first time.
“I want to thank each and every one of the participants,” said Charlie Becker - EAA community director and homebuilt community manager (who led the program from un-crating to first flight), “you gave the crew a lot of energy to make it happen. It’s an incredibly rewarding feeling.” Becker later said: “This airplane has touched a lot of lives and will continue to touch lives by showing it can be done.”
The purpose of the project was to demonstrate what Experimental aviation is all about: hands-on involvement and the feasibility of building and flying your own self-assembled aircraft! Click here for more... |

40th Anniversary Open House and Fly-in a success!
40th Anniversary Open House and Fly-in a success!
With Chris Heintz as the Guest of Honor and many Zenair designs able to fly-in for the event, Zenair's 40th Anniversary celebration was a friendly homecoming affair for the many in attendance. Builders who had been Zenair customers in the 70s and 80s were able to see how far along the company and its kitplane designs have evolved; newer customers and current builders had an opportunity to see some of Chris' older designs (CH 200, CH 300, etc...) which flew in for the occasion. Calling all Canadian builders, owners & flyers of a Zenair design!
As part of Zenair's 40-year anniversary activities (see below), we are working with Gary Wolf, President of the RAA and George Gregory, Editor of the Recreational Flyer (RAA's national magazine), to dedicate one of this summer's issues to the many Canadian builders and pilots who have assembled and flown a Zenair design at some point since 1974! If you have a story to share, an adventure and/or some pictures, we would love to hear from you!

We are looking for a few feature stories, but also for shorter reports and/or anecdotes that will help convey the impact of Chris Heintz, his aircraft designs, and the company he founded on individual builders/pilots (as well as on Canada's general recreational aviation scene). Be creative, but be fast; deadlines are fast approaching. Submissions can be sent to [email protected]; Gary Wolf can be contacted directly at [email protected] and George Gregory at [email protected]. We hope to hear back from many!

Back in 1976, Zenair amazed the world of amateur aircraft builders with its first ‘Eight Day Wonder’. At the time, Chris Heintz (Zenair founder) set out to prove that virtually anyone could assemble one of his ground-breaking all-metal airframe kits quickly and with ease. He led a dedicated team of volunteers to completely assemble and fly a Zenith CH 200 in just eight days during the 1976 EAA Oshkosh convention! Impressed, EAA president Paul Poberezny presented Zenair with its first certificate for "service and dedication to the advancement of Experimental aviation."
Since then, Zenair has repeated the feat at the 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1993 at EAA Sun’n Fun fly-ins, and was honored with ‘Best Workshop’ by Sport Pilot magazine as a result. No other kit manufacturer has ever attempted to top these record-breaking "Wonders". In 2014, and to help celebrate Zenair's 40th Anniversary in the kit aircraft business, a new "One-Week Wonder" has been announced for the annual 7-day Airventure Convention is Oshkosh, WI. The goal is to completely construct and taxi-test a Zenair CH 750 CRUZER by the end of the week-long event beginning on July 28. More... |

Zenair Celebrates 40 years in Business!
Zenair Celebrates 40 years in Business!
Canada's leading manufacturer of recreational aircraft kits will be forty this year. Started by Chris Heintz in 1974, Zenair Limited literally began in the founder’s 2-car garage; for the past 30 years, it has occupied 20,000 sq. ft. facilities on the Huronia Airport (CYEE) in Midland, ON. Today, the family-owned business still makes kits for the complete line of Heintz-designed sport-planes as well as eight different sizes of aircraft floats.
The company is planning for a large fly-in/Open House event at its headquarters on Saturday July 19th as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations. A week later, one of its aircraft kits (a STOL CH 750) will be fully assembled and tested during the seven-day AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh, WI. This “One Week Wonder” project will mirror similar feats accomplished by Zenair in the nineties - for the company’s 20th Anniversary. “We hope to have many join us for these events” says Heintz, “thousands of our kits have been assembled by amateur builders around the world over the past forty years and the July 19th fly-in will give builders, owners and enthusiast an opportunity to meet with each other and to visit the birthplace of their homebuilt aircraft.” Click here for more information on planned anniversary events... |

Zenair once again actively participated at this important European showcase in Germany. The company's presence was not as extravagant as last year for the inauguration of its new CH 650Ei factory-built ULM, yet Zenair representatives were stationed at multiple displays in 2013. ULM-Technologie could be found promoting the new ready-to-fly CH 650Ei while members from WAASPS also manned a display and offered public forums on how they use Zenair designs in their humanitarian efforts in Africa... CH 2000 Aircraft to be Built in Peru
Zenair Limited recently announced that its FAA type-certificated CH 2000 trainer will be assembled in Peru, South America by a joint venture involving the Peruvian armed services, the University of Perunas and SEMAN, a local aeronautical maintenance facility. Negotiations to structure the long-term program have been ongoing for the past year, with Zenair staff traveling to Lima last spring and a contingent of Peruvian decision-makers visiting the Ontario-based factory this summer. |
A first group of airframe engineers and assembly technicians are currently training in Midland, ON; a second group will arrive at the end of the year to work on aircraft systems, engine and instrumentation. Once trained and home again, this personnel will be in charge of local assembly, finishing and flight testing the aircraft. The University of Perunas will take delivery of the first six Peruvian-built CH 2000 in 2013, the first in a fresh fleet of new primary trainers for the school's aeronautical and aviation technician program.

Universities in France order ZENAIR designs
Four French Universities have selected the sporty Zodiac CH 650B as their “teaching” aircraft of choice. In France, where the CH 650 is semi-certified in the CNSK category, the kit aircraft can be assembled by amateurs and still be used by Aeroclubs and schools for flight training and banner-towing purposes.
This program is co-sponsored by the RSA, (French EAA/RAA) and aims to expose students in aeronautical programs to light aircraft and recreational flying. Canadian-manufactured parts for two aircraft have already been shipped from the Midland, ON factory; Zenair will deliver parts for five more aircraft in 2013.
Coordinating efforts at the local level are headed by Barge Aviation, a local Zenair representative who will also advise and assist with the project. A similar program in the USA is currently overseen by Zenith Aircraft and is underway at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
The Zodiac CH 650B is a second generation light sport aircraft, developed specifically for Sport Pilots. It is the latest model in the Zodiac line of aircraft from aeronautical engineer Chris Heintz, first introduced in 1984. This newest model offers new and updated features including modern new styling with a larger cabin area. More...
